Pellet stoves

We at Gondwana Green Heat have been fitting pellet stoves for nearly 20 years now. They have had a very slow start in the UK compared with our continental cousins.  This is mainly because the Uk is fairly traditional and conservative in terms of taste and the unknown .  These issues have now been successfully overcome, with companies like Island pellet stoves from wales manufacturing pellet stoves that look very similar to a  traditional wood burners, with the same flame pattern.  We are the dedicated Scottish dealer for Island pellets stoves, supplying , installing and maintaning these high quality Uk made pellet room and pellet boiler stoves.  Please see the Link below to the manufacturers site.

We of course still have MCZ from northern Italy supplying the UK with some stunning, contemporary and inovative pellet stoves and pellet boiler stoves. Please click the link below to see the full range of pellet stoves avalible fro Mcz

We offer three different kinds of pellet stove. We have listed these below

Room Heating Pellet Stove

A room heating pellet stove is the same as a conventional wood burning stove but has the benefit of running on convenient wood pellets.

Ducted Pellet Stove

A ducted pellet stove has the benefits of a room heating pellet stove with the additional benefit of moving warm air through ducting to different parts of your home. This ducting can be attached to the pellet stove or use a terminal discretely located in the wall / ceiling, like the picture below.  This ducting allows you to move heat all around your home . It should be noted we can add a ducting system to most pellet stove systems.

Pellet Boiler Stove

A pellet boiler stove looks the same as a room heating pellet stove, however it also has the benefit of heating water too.  So you can heat the room where the stove is located and heat water for radiator / underfloor heating and or tap water all at the  same time.  It is also possible to add a ducted air system to help spread the heat around your home.

We are now seeing overwhelming support for pellet stoves and pellet boiler stoves in the UK, with many people choosing them over the conventional log fuelled appliances. Why? There are many advantages to pellet stoves over conventional wood burning stoves.

Typical questions we get asked

  1. Firstly what are pellets? Well they are typically made of waste saw dust / wood.  The saw dust is compressed into a standardised length and diameter, pellets benefit rom a low moisture content.
  2. Wood pellets are a clean easily available fuel and typically come in manageable bags of 10 and 15 kg or for people who have storage, blown in delivery’s. The pellet fuel is poured into what we call a hopper , this hopper is within the stove itself.
  3. Very little ash is produced by the pellet stoves, the ash can be typically spread throughout a small garden or outdoor space, free fertiliser.
  4. Pellet stoves and pellet boiler stoves  have fully automated combustion, this allows the onboard computer to light the fuel, and add fuel to keep the room at your desired temperature.
  5. Beautiful design allows you to see flames, giving you the wood burning experience while not having to constantly tend the fire.
  6. Very high efficiency inline with other forms of biomass and fossil fuel boilers.
  7. You could change your existing gas/oil boiler for a pellet boiler stove and keep your existing radiators/underfloor heating or why not add a room heating appliance as a feature.
  8. Fuel stability, you are less reliant on global gas/ oil prices.
  9. You will be helping create UK jobs in forestry, haulage industry, yes thats right pellets are produced right here in Scotland.
  10. You will be doing your bit for the environment by going carbon neutral.
  11. Installed systems typically cost less to run then LPG , oil systems and burning kiln dried logs.
  12. Pellet  stoves are ideal for rented accommodation where existing solid fuel heating systems are installed, such as on farms and rural cottages . From a landlord’s point of view, there is less chance of breakdown and limited chance of burning the wrong fuel, eg wet fuel, which is a typical problem in log or multifuel stove systems in tenant properties.
  13. Pellet  stoves and boiler stoves come in a range of sizes to suit most domestic properties 1.5 kw to over 20 kw.
  14. All our pellet boiler stove systems are fitted with a thermal store giving you mains pressure hot water and radiators / underfloor heating.
  15. Pellet stoves come in a range of colours and shapes to suit all tastes.
  16. A pellet boiler stove can be linked with your existing fossil fuel or renewable heating system through our thermal store tanks.
  17. We supply a range of pellet stoves tall, squat, round , square, modern and traditional. We believe there is a pellet stove for everyone.
  18. very low emissions , typically 10 times less than a new modern eco design stove.
  19. Do i have to clean my pellet stove, yes a small amount of daily maintenance is needed around 1 minute. Ash pans also typically need cleaned out weekly during the heating season. Pellet stove also have chimneys, these are require cleaning once to two times per year depending on use
  20. Do i need need a chimney. Yes you do, we can utilise a existing chimney or we can fit a new pre manufactured stainless steel chimney.
  21. Do i need a air vent through the wall ?  while combustion appliances need a air supply we utilise a balanced chimney system on over 90% of our pellet stove installs, this works the same as a gas or oil boiler flue.  Fresh air is drawn through a outer layer in the chimney system, this air is preheated then ducted into the combustion chamber.  This means no air vent needed and improved efficiency.
  22. Do i need a hearth ? Yes a non combustible heath is needed with a minimum thickness of 12mm.
  23. I have a stove and it overheats the room, will a pellet stove do this too? No, a pellet stove is thermostatically controlled, this means you set the desired room temperature then the pellet stove then keeps the room at that temperature.
  24. what is the biggest output in Kw. We have pellet stoves that can produce as little as 1.5kw and have pellet stoves that can produce over 20kw.
  25. Im building a passive house, but im concerned about air tightness and overheating?  Well as previously mentioned we utilise a balanced chimney system where possible for pellet stoves, which means no air vent and since a pellet stove is thermostatically controlled overheating is not a issue.

The above clip is by Poujoulat and introduces the PGI pellet chimney system which is now our main supplier of chimney products for pellet stoves.  This system makes a great pellet stove, excellent. It allows for improved efficiency by pre heating the  supply air, which in turn reduces particle emissions. PGI also  comes with a array of air tight, fully insulated components for low energy and passive homes.  Because this chimney system is balanced its not effected by windy conditions, the chimney system also allows for shorter chimney systems and even horizontal terminations in certain situations with approved manufacturers.
