Flexible, and future‑proof

This project shows how flexible and future‑proof a well‑designed wood‑fuel system can be. The customer had an old, dilapidated oil boiler and was adding an extension — the perfect moment to go greener.

We installed a thermal store, a boiler stove, a new high‑efficiency oil boiler, and 100m² of underfloor heating throughout the extension.

The system was also pre‑prepared for future energy inputs, including solar thermal and a heat pump, giving the homeowner a clear upgrade path as technology and budgets evolve. This is the kind of integrated work we specialise in: traditional wood heating combined with modern engineering to make efficient, low‑carbon, multi‑source systems.

On reflection, the renovation of the 3 bed 2 bath traditional farmhouse in a semi‑remote location was probably trickier than it was given credit for. Fortunate then that David Adams’ Gondwana Green Heat were able to come in at a particularly early stage of the renovation, design and create a completely bespoke solution for the entire heating and domestic water requirements — including floors — that worked very well with everything that came later.

    A Dowling Sumo, set into the dining room fireplace.

  • New oil boiler

    High efficiency, replacing the old one rather than pretending it was not needed.

  • 100m² of underfloor heating

    Throughout the new extension.

  • Ports for solar thermal

    Left ready, so adding it later is a connection rather than a rebuild.

  • Ports for a heat pump

    The same, for whenever the technology or the budget arrives.

Three years on

Comfort, economy and convenience
