As promised, some information on how to get free firewood. When this was written, a scheme was being run by New Caledonian Woodlands, a charity helping people understand how to manage the woodlands around Scotland. It had already run a day taking people into the woods to show them how a woodland is managed — and the main benefit was that they let you take home the wood that was cut.
It is something we would like to see more of in Edinburgh, instead of the piles of oak, beech and birch left to rot that are a common sight around Craiglockhart and Colinton.
If you are interested in free wood, or simply in helping a woodland charity, look them up — and if you are burning what you bring home, make sure it is properly dry first.
