Here at Gondwana we have been pushing the benefits of low energy new and retrofit construction since we started over 20 years ago. We recently felt it was time to offer Passive house design and consultancy. While being Passive house qualified is not rare, it is rare for engineers like us to be certified.

So why did we decide it was time to offer Passive house design and consultancy, energy efficient homes and buildings in general in the Uk are poor, architects are generally more interested in making designs look pretty or meeting the minimum building standards required locally. While we are also passionate about quality architecture, we also know that for a building to be thermal comfortable, healthy, cheap to run and a joy to live in requires a good design first, correct selection of materials, then management and sometimes hands on training to ensure the project delivers in all areas.

Passive house and low energy services we provided .

  1. Overall initial design assessment’s, this is a chance to hash out a plan and see quickly where improvement could be made in terms of thermal efficiency, comfort and of course cost of your project.
  2. Reducing thermal bridges, windows, doors, foundations etc
  3. Insulation types thickness pro’s and cons, costs and environmental impact.
  4. Glazing , how much to have, types of windows and doors.
  5. orientation and shading
  6. Air tightness layers , location of barriers, tapes .
  7. Mvhr ( mechanical ventilation heat recovery) design and commissioning and heating.
  8. Heating and hot water systems.
  9. On site training for contractors and or self build, a chance for you to learn from air tightness to mvhr.
  10. On site checking, ensuring the project is built as per plan using the correct materials to the standards needed for low energy and passive house construction projects.
  11. Installation of Mvhr, heating and hot water systems . Heat pumps, solar biomass etc.
